Salsa Retreat
Experience a unique combination of yoga retreat, active vacation, cultural immersion and responsible travel during this week-long retreat in the beautiful Casa Colonial in Oaxaca, Mexico, UNESCO World Heritage site and Mexican capital of Salsa dancing. The Casa Colonial offers peaceful relaxation in beautiful gardens and is the ideal starting point for explorations of the rich local culture from music and dance to cuisine and archeology. The retreat is designed with the principles of sustainable tourism in mind, and the focus is on supporting the local community in a meaningful way. Besides working exclusively with local yoga and Salsa instructors, it is the goal for each retreat to sponsor the school education of one underprivileged child for one year. A visit to the local non-profit organization Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots is included.
A typical day will start with yoga practice in the morning followed by a healthy breakfast with fresh tropical fruit. Salsa practice at a local dance school follows afterwards. The first half of the Salsa class is taught in a group format where the focus is on practicing body isolations, afro-Cuban movements and typical Salsa footwork. As a result students will learn how to make the basic step more gracefully, and expand their creative capacities by discovering new styling techniques. Later each participant will work with a personal instructor/dance partner to work on partnering and connecting through music.
The week-long workshop adjusts to all levels; beginners gain an understanding of the fundamental elements of Salsa, while the more experienced Salsa dancers will improve their repertoire significantly. After the afternoon comida, the Mexican lunch, there is plenty of time to relax and the rest of the day is free to explore the city. Private guided tours to select archeological sites and other places of interest will be offered throughout the week. The day concludes with a light supper at the Casa Colonial in the evening.
